Charles McGeoghegan was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island on 15 October 2007 during a successful by-election in that District. He was sworn in as a Liberal Member on 31 October 2007.
McGeoghegan has been a commercial fisher since 1992 even though he boasts he sailed on family boats since he was six years old, and in 2006, he completed construction and launched his own 45-foot commercial fishing boat.
He was educated at Belfast Consolidated and Montague Regional High School. From there he attended the Canadian Coast Guard College in Point Edward, Nova Scotia, for Search and Rescue training and for additional electronic and navigational courses. At present, McGeoghegan holds his Captain’s papers for fishing vessels up to 100 tonnes.
He has lived and worked in Belfast - Murray River his entire life and, as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, continues to be a vocal advocate for the fishing industry. He served as President of the Central Northumberland Strait Fishermen’s Association and was Director of the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association. He is also a volunteer member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and serves on the Board of Advisors for the University of Maine’s Lobster Institute.
As an aside, he is a world champion arm wrestler having represented P.E.I. in international competition five times, gained the Canadian Championship in 1998 and became World Champion at the WAF World Armwrestling Championships in Ottawa, Ontario in 2003.
In the Legislative Assembly he sits on the following Legislative Standing Committees: Agriculture, Forestry and Environment; Fisheries, Intergovernmental Affairs and Transportation; and Public Accounts.
Charles McGeoghegan lives in Roseberry (Belfast) and is married to Connie (Pennell). They have three children; Stephen, Courtney and Daniel.
